Sony Vertical Grip for Alpha a9 Full Frame Mirrorless Camera

The VG-C3EM Vertical Grip for the a9 makes shooting in vertical orientation just as efficient and comfortable as horizontal orientation with a full complement of essential controls, including a duplicate Multi-Selector. The grip shape is identical to the grip on the camera body, so no hold adjustment is required and features a robust dust and moisture resistant magnesium alloy exterior for high rigidity, durability, and maximum reliability.

Made for a9, this camera grip provides secure holding when shooting with the camera held vertically, just the same as with horizontal composition. Two NP-FZ100 batteries can be loaded for longer hours of shooting and the grip supports USB charging via the camera body.

Equal vertical and horizontal operability

VG-C3EM body design makes it almost equally easy to control the camera in vertical and horizontal positions, thanks to keys and controls that are nearly the same as those on the back of the camera body. For example, the vertical grip provides a Multi Selector for fast selection of an AF point.

Grip-shape like a9 body for assured hold

VG-C3EM provides a grip-shape like that of the α9 body, allowing you to get an enhanced hold for confident shooting in vertical position that is virtually the same as that in horizontal position.

Nearly 2x longer stamina

VG-C3EM vertical grip loads two NP-FZ100 batteries in its housing. You can check the camera LCD monitor to see the remaining power of the battery in use as a percentage (1% minimum unit) on the power indicator. When the power of one battery runs out, the other battery automatically switches on to continue operation.

USB power charging via camera body

You can charge batteries loaded in the vertical grip, using the camera’s USB port without detaching the grip from the camera body.

Highly rigid magnesium for exterior

Made of magnesium alloy, the same as a9, this grip is highly rigid and lightweight.

Careful attention to dust/moisture resistance

Effective dust- and moisture-resistant sealing is applied to key and controls, as well as ports and electric contacts, for tough usage in harsh shooting conditions.

Sony Vertical Grip for Alpha a9 Full Frame Mirrorless Camera SKU: VGC3EM

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice grip, wish it had more buttons Nice grip to get a bit better grip on the camera, but I wish it was more like the a77ii/a99ii grip. I miss a few buttons every once in a while

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Endless Power Supply, Easier to Grip Camera I love the extended grip. It feels great in the hand. You have to admit, the a7-III is a small camera, but the grip makes you look like a pro with a huge camera! (That's just a vanity perk!) Seriously, people do tend to take you more seriously seeing that you have a professional looking setup. But it's not just perception. The extra buttons for portrait shots are great for people who aren't contortionists. Also, the added benefit of never running out of battery life is great. I leave my camera on as I walk down streets or trails, or am sitting with friends. The camera is always ready to go. I took the camera on a 1 week long trip with the 2 batteries in the grip and one spare. I never once hooked the camera to a charger and I took tons of pictures. However, since I was rarely around electricity for the trip, I would turn the camera off when I knew it wouldn't be in use. The only problem I have with the grip is that I can't use my LA-EA4 a-mount adapter with the grip installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Grip! I had read the reviews on the a7Riii and noted the comments on the ergonomics of the grip. I was not surprised when I first held the camera that my little finger dangled in space. I had heeded the comments, bought the battery grip and added it immediately to my camera purchase. Yes, it adds bulk and weight to an otherwise svelte camera. The added sq. inches for my hand is much welcomed! It adds to hand held stability. The second battery is an added benefit. Recommend that if you buy this that you buy two spare batteries. That way you can swap and go! If you're into the looks and status kind of thing-this combination with a large lens will make you the envy of the camera boys!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Build Quality NOT Suitable for Professional Camera I've used major brand SLRs for decades, and just switched to Sony. I bought this grip for my A7RIII. In general, the build quality is good (buttons, dials, housing). However, there are a couple of serious issues, and piece of equipment like this is only as good as its weakest part. The more minor of them is that there's no weather sealing between the grip and the camera base or in the battery tray door. This is a serious oversight, considering that Sony didn't properly seal the base of the A7RIII camera, and adding a well-sealed grip could have fixed that problem (luckily, there is at least a seal around the base of the battery insert column). The major problem is the battery tray. The switch to open it feel thin and dangerously weak. The entire tray is thin, brittle feeling plastic, and that includes the compartment cover that forms the left side of the grip. This is the part of the grip that's going to get banged around while you're working (if you're a photojournalist) half the time, and it is thinner and more brittle feeling than even the cheap 3rd-party grips that I've bought for my backup DSLRs in the past. I have no doubt that I'll need to replace it within a year of normal field use. This plastic is quite thin: just 1mm. Unlike the rest of the grip, the "leather" textured portion of it is not rubberized; it's just the same plastic. When I buy a piece of professional equipment, I expect it to feel sturdy and built to last. If I want thin plastic, I can buy the cheap 3rd party knock off. Please tell me, Sony, that this plastic is some kind of super plastic or carbon-fiber reinforced material. I'd like to feel better about keeping it.
