Sony Alpha a7 III 24.2MP Full Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only)

Refined for extraordinary image capture control and quality, the a7 III has everything you need. An entirely renewed image sensor and image processing system further enhance image quality. Improved overall AF performance, high-speed continuous shooting up to 10fps, 4K movie recording capability, and operability that has been dramatically upgraded from the a7 II allow you to capture more decisive moments.

24.2MP BSI Full-Frame Image Sensor

The newly developed 24.2MP back-illuminated 35mm full-frame Exmor R CMOS image sensor is paired with a front-end LSI that effectively doubles the readout speed of the image sensor, as well as an updated BIONZ X processing-engine that boosts processing speed by approximately 1.8 times compared to the a7 II. This results in high sensitivity with low-noise performance and wide 15-stop dynamic range. It also has the ability to output 14 bit RAW format even when shooting in silent or continuous mode.

Up to 10 fps with Silent or Mechanical Shutter

The a7 III is equipped with a refined image processing system that allows it to capture full 24.2MP images at up to 10 fps with continuous and accurate AF/AE tracking for up to 177 Standard JPEG images, 89 compressed RAW images or 40 uncompressed RAW images. This high speed 10 fps mode is available with either a mechanical shutter or an electronic shutter for completely silent shooting. The a7 III can also shoot continuously at up to 8 fps in live view mode with minimal lag in the high-contrast 2.36-million dot OLED electronic viewfinder or 3-inch 922K-dot tiltable touch LCD screen.

4K Full-Frame HDR Movie

High-resolution full-frame 4K movies with full-pixel readout without pixel binning that condenses approximately 2.4 times the amount of data required for 4K movies results in minimal moiré and jaggies. Advanced image processing makes it possible to record full-frame 4K movies with outstanding image quality in the mid-to-high ISO range, so you make the most of the 4K movie format's unique potential in every shot.

High-Resolution XGA OLED Tru-Finder

Providing high resolution and contrast, plus the excellent gradation and color reproduction that are advantages of OLED viewfinders, this approximately 2359K-dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder faithfully depicts images with clear corner-to-corner visibility. Magnification is 0.78x. ZEISS T* coating greatly reduces obtrusive lens reflection on the ocular lens.

5-Axis In-Body Image Stabilization

The 5-axis in-body SteadyShot image stabilization system has been fine-tuned to support high-resolution shooting capacity, resulting in an IS system at 5-step shutter speed advantage. Camera shake is effectively compensated on 5 axes: pitch and yaw that have the largest overall impact on image quality; X and Y shift that is most apparent at high magnification, and roll that can ruin night shots and movies. Stabilization is applied to the live-view image, making it easier to frame fast-moving subjects. Effective stabilization is provided for movies as well as stills, and for A-mount lenses attached via a mount adapter.

Hybrid Autofocus System

The a7 III features a world class autofocus system consisting of 693 focal-plane phase-detection AF points that cover approximately 93% of the image area, 425 contrast AF points and reliable Eye-AF. When combined, both contrast and phase detection AF points form the 4D FOCUS hybrid AF system for wide, fast, reliable AF that locks on and stays locked on. This advanced system delivers AF acquisition in about half the time as the a7 II in low-light conditions with tracking that is approximately 2 times more accurate as well. The acclaimed Eye AF feature is also approximately twice as effective, and is available when utilizing AF-C mode and with Sony’s A-mount lenses with an adapter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Camera I have owned I bought this camera to replace a Sony A77. This is a great camera with lots of features. It is especially good in low light. It is light weight and easy to use. All my old lenses work with this camera with an added adapter. This camera has improved battery life. I tried an A7II and the battery life was not good. I love this camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect All Around I bought this upgrade from a canon 7D. The settings and controls are something to get used to just like anything moving from one brand to another. I bought this camera with the kit lens and a 50mm f1.8(the cheap one). I'm not nerding out on specs and numbers, I judge a camera on performance, ease of use, and longevity. The camera and lenses are easy to update with firmware. THis camera along with intermediate knowledge in photography is should last for many years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first really good camera Been shooting the a7iii for 18 months and love it. So versatile. Fast auto focus I shoot wildlife, Astro and landscape. It is truly a versatile camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Camera for Intermediate Photographers I upgraded to this camera about 8 months ago. Before I was very much a beginner using an entry level Nikon. I wanted to upgrade to take my photography to the next level as my skill level increased and this camera provided the most bang for my money without spending a lot of $$$ on professional level cameras. This camera is extremely easy to use. The menu and buttons were a little difficult to navigate at first but I attribute that to my lack of experience combined with the switch from Nikon DSLR to a Sony full frame mirrorless camera. After a about two weeks I was able to figure everything out. I recommend pairing this camera body with the Sony FE 24mm f1.4 GM and the Sony FE 70-200mm f2.8 GM OSS lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera for a mid-level professional I bought this camera at the beginning of September 2019 and I paired it with a Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS lens. What a great match and a decision I made. I simply love the camera and how it handles. It also fits perfectly in my hands when I am shooting. I still love my Canon cameras but Sony definitely has the edge and far advanced when it comes to mirrorless cameras. Only negative thing I do not like is how the charging location of the camera and how it dangles from the body when charging.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! Finally a camera that I am pleased with! So I have had it only a week and the testing I have done so far puts my Canons to shame. I do not say this lightly as I have been using Canon's for 25+ years and I am extremely fussy about file quality. I own or have owned nearly everyone of the Canon pro line of cameras - except the 1dxMarkII. With my line of work (full-time portrait & wedding photographer)I needed a camera that was lighter, responsive and one that excels at night time shooting. As many of my portrait sessions are at night - I need clean files at high iso and a camera that can focus. This Sony A7III is just what I have been waiting for. The bonus, my EF lenses work beautifully (1.2 and 1.4's) Now the questions is A9 or pick up an A7IIIR or the A7IV? Thanks Sony for creating such a wonderful product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exdeeded expectations I've only had the A7III for a couple weeks but I am very impressed with the functionality of the camera and the quality of the photos that I've taken so far. Camera operation is easy to learn and customization options for buttons and My Menu work great. The only thing that I would like is for the grip to be larger for all four fingers to hold the camera

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really the best camera ever!!! I have bought this camera. First I did a research about all cameras in the market and this camera is absolutely amazing!!!!
Date published: 2019-11-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Camera! Would like a few improvements... I've had this camera since it was released. It is wonderful in so many ways (autofocus, dynamic range, etc.), with two issues, and one request: 1. The camera sometimes stops to tell me that an accessory is not compatible. I believe this is related to the overly complex multi-function hot-shoe. This interface should be more robust. 2. Menus are not great - but tolerable due to the available customizations and menus. 3. Request: I am very happy with 24mp for almost all of my work. I would, however, really love to have pixel-shift high resolution mode. This would allow me to use the feature when needed without having crazy huge files for everything else. My main interest is to eliminate color moire, which is good, but not perfect. To recap, I love the camera for lots of reasons, but would like these few things improved.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from itis one of the best camera out there i bought that A7 III and i love it did exceed my expectation, highly recommend the battery grip is a life saver and peace of mind however the battery life is great i went for 2 weak vacation and only charge it once and i was almost doing every thing with camera

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible camera, could be even better I've had my A7III since January 2019 and it's hard to say anything bad about it. It takes fantastic photos and is versatile - I have a large collection of lenses, old manual focus lenses, as well as AF lenses from another company. All work flawlessly with the correct adapters. Sony glass is also incredible - I love the 24-105 f4 G OSS. If I could complain about anything, it would be, 1) Sony should streamline their menu system; 2) a fully articulating, fully touch-functional LCD screen would be awesome; and 3) native Sony zoom lenses should show their current focal lengths in the screen. Can these things be addressed with firmware updates? Sony, are you listening?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So happy I switched to mirriorless fullframe! I brought this camera about 4 months ago and so happy I did. I was skeptical about switching to mirrorless as my old camera was aps-c dslr. The first huge thing I noticed was the autofocus working just as well while using the monitor as if I was using the viewfinder. This was huge for being able to get low to the ground shots. I'm not a professional by any means but I can see this being used by a professional easily. The focusing is amazing with sony native lenses. I had some issues trying to adapt canon ef mount dslr lenses to the camera due to them not being usable for video but that isn't an issue with the camera by any means. There is so many good things to say about this camera. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Currently Viable for Low Light/Long Exposure I shoot a lot of astro and nightscape timelapse. I recently upgraded to this camera from my Nikon D5300. I love many of the features the A7 III brings to the table, but there is a serious defect with how it handles long exposures especially in low light conditions. If you take an image with the shutter on, you'll see that there are hot pixels all throughout the image when it should be completely black. This still persists when shooting a long exposure in low light conditions. I've opened a ticket with Sony to try to confirm if this is expected behavior, or something that could be fixed with a firmware update. So far this issue is persistent on both of the A7 III bodies I've tested with multiple lenses, so it seems to be an inherent defect. Until this is addressed, this camera is absolutely unusable for long exposure in low light conditions, are very poor for long exposure in normal conditions. If this issue is fixed, I would readily give a full 5 stars to this camera. If it operated as expected in the scenarios mentioned above, it would be a nearly perfect camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exemplary Images I have had this camera body for about 6 weeks... Absolute joy to work with... All my lenses are fast and sharp on this camera... Eye AF is accurate... Silent mode is great...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay. Needs Re-Design / Upgrade This camera is good. However, it doesn't focus well on small objects, the body is too small (there's no place for your pink, which feels unstable), and the menu is way, way too big and complex. As a former Canon enthusiast, the complexity of this camera makes me want to throw it off the mountain sometimes! I want to be able to quickly change between modes/color schemes without having to change a million settings and/or do a million calculations in my head. The camera is good, but its got a long way to go before its great. Also, the cost for sony lenses is way overpriced, and needs to come down 20% before I would be willing to keep this camera. Who knows, maybe in 1-2 years they'll finally have fixed the problems? I sure hope so, because there's tons of potential for this camera...just wouldn't buy at this time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Video auto gain control For photos it's ok but for indoor real video NO! 1.- In low lights. If you see the low Lights clips indoor recorded (650 iso and firmware 2) from Sony A7III in Sony Catalyst Browser software, in the information of camera master gain adjustment set gain from +9 Db to +33Db (with any control of this setting) generate much noise in dark sites. You Know how set Gain to 0 for video? 2.- With tungsten or other houses lights, has a heavy Banding and flickering on video and can't reduce by shutter speed, if I work PAL at 25 is worst. Any other model, like a9 or a7RIII, it's is fixed that?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My Review I really love this camera. The price, design, and features are great. There is one thing I did not like about it which was the video recording limitation it has. I wish it did not have this enabled. Besides that it is great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I WANTED TO LOVE IT... The positive first: Images are crystal clear with quite pricey 55mm f1.8 lens; image quality amazing; 24-105mm f4.0 nice enough; low light capability is super. "My Menu" and Quick Access feature nice. The not so positive: 1) tilt screen - too stiff and not quite adjustable enough – why not a fully articulating screen Sony?; built-in flash and battery charger included would have been nice; 2) 24-105mm is not ergonomically compatible with the camera at all. The lens is quite heavy for the camera, so not balanced and with poor grip design shooting created spasms in my thumbs. After shooting a dancer on stage for about two hours had to wear a brace on my right hand for two days after. Forgot my monopod and paid the price. However, shots taken without flash were much sharper compared to my friend's Canon. The following week, I was outside shooting kids flying kites for two hours. Now both my thumbs ached for four days. What a drag. 3) I'm not a professional photographer and not young so I don’t carry two cameras or a lot of lenses. I would have been much more amenable to keeping the camera if Sony offered a longer zoom - 24-135 or 140mm F2.8 as I take so many types of photos - even in the course of a few hours on a Sunday (family group, candid kid shots, peacocks, landscape, indoor chanting meditation, food, etc); 4) while taking video, this lens sticks when zooming slowly in and out so there is no smooth transition - unacceptable; 5) touch pad & joy stick focus unpredictable and unreliable - drove me crazy. 6) After doing so much research and finally choosing the camera I wanted, the menu was a huge learning curve even though I own an older Sony, so I took a two-hour private class with someone already experienced on this model which helped quite a bit. I really wanted this Sony, was willing to overlook a few things, but in the end, after 2-1/2 months, the relationship with this camera didn’t gel - the clincher was hurting my hands. Yes, I could have tried a grip but had already made a substantial investment in time, accessories, money. I needed more than a great image out of the box. I wanted to enjoy it, become one with it, like I have with my other Sony camera, but in the end, decided to call it quits and sent it back. I will have some beautiful shots and nostalgia (memories with the pain removed). I’m truly disappointed and sorry to say good-bye. I returned the camera.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Powerful Camera; Significant Limitations This is a very powerful camera, no doubt. But it is ridiculous that it does not have Touch-To-Focus Remote Functionality through the mobile app, or a built-in Intervalometer. These are basic functions that Sony has left out with no sign of integration anytime soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mirrorless all around "The Sony A7 III is a great mirrorless camera, it will take me some time to get used to the menu and custom the options but overall this is the biggest deal you can find at this price! This kit has everything to get you shooting right away. It comes with two additional batteries and a charger that will make your life easier. The hard case has 2 pieces of pre cut foam that you can custom the way you want and it also comes with an SD card and lens cleaner kit!"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just two things I would like to change This is a great camera! I was looking for a successor for my Canon EOS 5D II and so far I'm very happy with this camera (thanks to the Sigma MC-11 which allows me to keep using my Canon lenses that I've collected over many years). I use it mainly for still photography and when the situation allows for it I prefer a "down tempo" shooting style where I take the time to adjust the aperture, focus, and exposure manually. I'll not list the pros and cons. You probably already know them but I'll mention two things I hope Sony will change in a firmware update. 1) Few aspect ratios. It is only possible to choose 3:2 and 16:9. Where is square, 5:4 and 4:3, etc.? In such a feature-rich camera it sounds to me almost like an oversight not to include them. 2) Aperture preview and focus zoom do not get along. From Canon EOS cameras I'm used to having a dedicated DOF-preview button. This camera does not have one but you can assign the feature Aperture Preview to one of the C-buttons which will do the same. This is nice for seeing how the photo will look if you don't shoot with the lens wide open. Another feature I really like is the focus zoom function that allows me to zoom in and see exactly where the focus is. Unfortunately, these two functions do not work together. If I zoom in to an area to check the focus and press Aperture Preview the zoom function exits. I often use a manual 35mm Voigtlander lens (with a Leica mount attached to an adapter) so with that lens it's not a problem because I can control the aperture with the mechanical aperture ring on the lens. But it is ironic that I actually prefer a fully manual lens for my shooting style over one with a native mount that integrates with the camera's electronics.
