Sony E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens (Black)
Sony's E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens (Black) is a powerful prime lens designed for Sony E-mount for NEX. The 50mm focal length makes this lens ideal for portraiture as well as many other applications. It offers a 35mm equivalent focal length of 75mm. Sony packed this lens with advanced features that ensure quality optical performance, including its Optical SteadyShot image stabilization. This lens based optical image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps. When paired with the bright f/1.8 aperture this creates stunning imagery even in challenging low-light conditions. There is a linear autofocus motor which is designed into and paired with a stepping motor which ensures silent aperture acutation while capturing video. In order to facilitate refined control over focus, Direct Manual Focus (DMF) is supported. This allows for manual fine-tuning of focus when in AF mode to enhance working with selective focus imagery. Also contributing to shallow depth of field applications is a seven-blade circular aperture that provides a smooth quality to out-of-focus backgrounds. This lens creates a 32° angle of view, a 1.28' minimum focusing distance and accepts 49mm filters.
Aperture
Bright, wide-aperture lens with 50 mm fixed focal length, ideal for portraits and general photography.
F1.8 maximum aperture allows creation of smooth background defocus effects (bokeh)—ideal for flattering your portrait subject.
SteadyShot Image Stabilization
Sony's Alpha DSLR cameras are designed with the SteadyShot Image Stabilization inside the camera body itself. This means that the lenses that you attach to them don't require the added bulk of a IS system. The result is a lighter and more streamlined lenses that does not require the added weight of the mechanics.
Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.
Direct Manual Focus (DMF)
Direct Manual Focus enables the user to manually fine-tune the focus while in AF mode. This allows for enhanced control over selective focus imagery.
Stepping Motor (STM)
The stepping motor (STM) pairs with the newly-designed focusing mechanism in order to fully handle the quick and accurate capture of focus. This function enables smooth and incredibly quiet continuous auto focusing capabilities while recording video or shooting still images.
Internal Focusing (IF)
Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you're using a polarizing filter.
Circular Aperture
When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This 'bokeh' effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
