Sony's HVL-F45RM External Flash with Wireless Radio Control is a powerful yet compact flash designed for Sony E-mount cameras. Its bounce head rotates 360 degrees horizontally and also tilts 150 degrees upward and 8 degrees downward so you can fine-tune illumination based on the environment you’re shooting in. This flash also allows photographers to wirelessly control up to 15 other flash units in up to 5 groups from 98 feet. Because the unit uses radio waves as well as optical wireless communication, it functions in broad daylight and without requiring line-of-sight. Adjusting settings and operating the unit is easy thanks to Sony’s Quick Navi control interface and tab-based menu structure displayed on an easy-to-read LCD screen.

Built-In Wireless Radio Control

Thanks to this flash’s radio control system, photographers can place clusters of flash units anywhere they want, including behind furniture or in other rooms, without worrying about maintaining line-of-sight for operation. The use of radio frequencies also means you can use the unit outdoors in direct sunlight which isn’t possible with traditional infrared units. Now you can experiment with nearly limitless lighting set-ups and all you have to do is remain within 98 feet of the flash groups you want to control.

Small but Powerful Lighting Capability

The HVL-F45RM is designed specifically for Sony’s smaller E-mount cameras, but the flash’s compact design doesn’t sacrifice the functionality of larger models. It has a guide number of 45 and a recycles in approximately 2.5 seconds for powerful illumination when you need it. It also has an LED light for constant lighting while recording video or shooting stills.

HVL-F45RM bounce head for flexible lighting rotates 360-degree horizontally (180-degree in both left and right directions) and also tilts 150-degree upward and 8-degree downward, providing the illumination you want depending on shooting situations.

High-Speed Sync

Take advantage of synced flash with a high-speed shutter. Whereas conventional sync shooting requires that the shutter speed be the same or slower than the synced flash speed, the aperture would be narrowed, making it difficult to get background bokeh effects. But with high-speed sync (HSS) you can use flash with any shutter speed, even up to the highest shutter speed provided by the camera. This allows you to increase the aperture as needed to create a narrow depth of field that keeps your subject in perfect focus while the background blurs, for beautiful portraits. Wireless high-speed sync is also possible with compatible cameras.

Through-the-Lens (TTL) Wireless Flash

Even when performing wireless flash shooting, flash output can be determined based on accurate measurement of the amount of light through the lens. Since you can freely change the position and direction of the flash unit exactly as you want, it's possible to soften intense shadows and suppress blown highlights when shooting a subject from right in front (of the subject), or add soft shadows that emphasize a sense of depth and presence. Wireless flash ratio control is available.

Advanced Distance Integration (ADI)

ADI provides automatic metering that is virtually unaffected by the reflectance of subjects or backgrounds, maintaining correct exposure even with overly reflective or overly dark subjects. It pre-flashes the unit to incorporate the reflected light measurement, together with precise distance information from a compatible camera's lens, to achieve the optimum flash level.
