Tiffen Softnet filters replicate the silkstocking effect of yesteryear, but the net is encased in optically polished glass to last for years. Using these filters causes portions of the light to glance off the edges of the mesh lines. This light is diffracted— bent in its path—so that the angle, and thus the distance to the plane of focus, is altered. This has the effect of rendering fine details, such as wrinkles and skin blemishes, softer and less noticeable. The finer the mesh, the greater the number of lines on the filter, and the stronger the effect.
