Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN & Sigma 90mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lenses

Today Sigma announced two new Contemporary lenses for full-frame, mirrorless cameras. The new 24mm F2 DG DN and 90mm F2.8 DG DN are also part of Sigma’s I Series, a collection of compact, high-performance lenses that is distinct from their product lines (Art, Contemporary, Sports).

With the addition of the new models, there are now six lenses in the Sigma I Series. All six lenses are available in L-mount and Sony E-mount. The letters ‘DG’ in their name indicates they offer full-frame sensor coverage, while ‘DN’ means they are exclusively for mirrorless camera systems:

Here’s everything we know so far about the two new lenses.

The new Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN is the second I Series lens with a 24mm focal length. Offering a wider maximum aperture than its counterpart, the 24mm F3.5, the new lens provides an opportunity to shoot more effectively in low-light. The 24mm F3.5 is smaller and more affordable, and Sigma has confirmed it remains in production.

The 24mm F2 has a sophisticated optical construction, with eleven groups and thirteen elements, including one FLD, two SLD, and two aspherical elements. Together, these will ensure the lens delivers crisp, clear visuals with minimal aberrations.

Despite its premium optics, the 24mm F2 has a sleek, all-metal build consistent with the I Series. Measuring 2.75 x 2.8’’ and weighing 12.9 oz, the small lens should pair well with compact, full-frame mirrorless cameras like the Sony a7C or Sigma fp L.

With a wide maximum aperture of F2, the new lens promises a decent low-light performance and smooth, luscious bokeh when shooting wide open. It’s a great option for astrophotography, landscape photography, and street photography.

Sigma 90mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary Lens

The Sigma 90mm F2.8 DG DN is the longest I Series lens yet. High-quality, mid-telephoto lenses tend to be large, however the 90mm F2.8 offers a premium optical construction housed within a lightweight, compact build. The lens measures 2.5 x 2.35’’ and weighs just 10.4 oz.

With a high-quality optical construction, including 5 SLD elements, and a wide maximum aperture of F2.8, the new 90mm lens should deliver crisp, clear visuals, even in low light. Additionally, the lens has a minimum focusing distance of just 19.7’’ and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5. This should enable the lens to offer a decent macro photography performance.

Sharing the same maximum diameter and 55mm filter size with two other I Series lenses – the 24mm F3.5 and the 45mm F2.8 – the 90mm completes a versatile lens trio that’s ideal for photographers and filmmakers that use filters regularly. Together, the three prime lenses can be used for most styles of photography, from shooting landscapes to portraiture. Additionally, the compact nature of the lenses makes them easy to carry together.

Given its focal length and aperture, we highly recommend the 90mm F2.8 for portraiture. The long focal length will allow you to easily capture medium and close up photos of your subject, while the wide maximum aperture should ensure pleasing background separation and bokeh.
