Sony Alpha FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM Super Telephoto Zoom Lens

The Sony Alpha FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM Super Telephoto Zoom Lens is a full-frame super telephoto zoom that provides exceptional sharpness, fast AF and a compact design despite outstanding performance. Like other products in the G Master lens series, this lens has a high standard of resolution. Amateur enthusiasts and professional photographers alike will find the FE 100-400mm GM to be a powerful zoom ideal for capturing sports or wildlife.

High-Performance Image Stabilization

High-performance Optical SteadyShot image stabilization is built right into the lens for sharp, blur-free images with a wide range of subjects and handheld shooting. The stabilization lens is driven by a linear motor for fast, precise compensation. Additionally, 5-axis image stabilization becomes available when used with Alpha series cameras that feature built-in image stabilization

Extraordinary Detail and Bokeh

The Sony Alpha FE 100-400mm GM provides outstanding sharpness combined with smooth bokeh in the same lens. It achieves spatial frequency of 50 lines pairs per millimeter at a lens' widest aperture while simultaneously producing beautiful bokeh. 22 lens elements in 16 groups, including one Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and two ED glass elements, help minimize chromatic aberration and provide unprecedented corner-to-corner resolution. The high resolution of this lens helps to enable superior reproduction with high contrast. Sony's Nano anti-reflective coating makes it a great lens for sports or wildlife scenes, minimizing unwanted reflections, flare and ghosting.

Fast, Quiet and Precise Focus

The FE 100-400mm GM super telephoto zoom lens features a double motor system that helps maximize AF performance and keep up with fast-moving action. The Direct Drive Supersonic Wave Motor (DDSSM) drives the heavy front focus lens group, and the Double-linear motor system enables rapid acceleration of the main lens group for capturing sudden subject motion. With high precision positioning control and a newly optimized AF algorithm, the FE 100-400mm GM quickly finds and focuses on your subject.

Professional Operability

This lens is designed for both professionals and enthusiasts who want instant and direct control. Quickly switch between auto and manual focus via the AF/MF focus mode switch on the side, depending on how much focusing control you desire. A focus range limiter switch can either let the lens hunt through the focal range or limit the range from 3m to infinity for faster focusing on distant subjects. There are other switches and buttons for image stabilization compensation and customizable focus hold. Operating this lens is easy for amateurs and pros.

Removable Rotating Tripod Mount

A removable, versatile lens tripod mount lets you quickly remove the camera from a tripod when you need a handheld solution. This mount features a revolving mechanism to let you quickly change between landscape and portrait orientation. It also has a secure lock mechanism to prevent accidental detachment.

9-blade Circular Aperture

The 9-blade circular aperture contributes to gorgeous bokeh in which the subject stands out against a smoothly defocused foreground and background as well as perfectly round points of defocused light. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing, polygonal shaped defocused points of light. Alpha lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular.

Lightweight Design

Photographers or videographers who want a lighter, smaller and more portable option will find it with this super telephoto lens. The FE 100-400mm GM weighs just 49.3 ounces, among the lightest in its class and ideal for Sony's compact cameras.

Sony Alpha FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM Super Telephoto Zoom Lens

Sony Alpha FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM Super Telephoto Zoom Lens SKU: SEL100400GM

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great telephoto lens Great telephoto lens. Not good for low light applications tho. Day light photography unless you want to use crazy high iso. Auto focus is definitely on point!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from pricey but quality images well designed lens. The selection of available lenses is wonderful that was the reason i purchased the Mirrorless camera.from Sony and dd not buy the Nikon

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Lens while it lasted I purchased this lens in March 2021. It performed great the first few times when I used it to take a few shots of the moon (see photo), and a few other shots. I took it on a recent vacation and when I went to use it, I could not get it to focus either in Manual or Automatic mode. The sharpness is no longer there even though I babied this lens, no drops or rough handling. I have no clue as to why, but now I have to go through the hassle of sending it in for repair etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tack sharp and fast autofocus I bought this lens a few weeks ago and am overjoyed. It actually weighs less than the 70-200 GM and is incredibly sharp. Really glad that I made the purchase. Wish that the lens foot had an Arca Swiss dovetail built in so that you don't have to either add a lens plate or spend the money to replace the foot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Action delight This lens is incredible for everything from close up shots of flowers or hummingbrids to fast paced action of breaching whales in rough seas. The image stabilization and autofocus are outstanding. It is also built like a tank without feeling excessively heavy or at all off balanced. Fantastic lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love this lens!! I have been shooting Canon gear for many years and after seeing that my Sony RX10III got better results than my Canon 7D Mark II equipped with Canon's 100-400 MM L lens, I decided to look into high end Sony equipment and purchased this lens with a Sony A9 II. Amazing results - I was blown away by the immediate acquisition of birds in flight which is one of my favorite subjects. I am totally sold on this and my A9 II camera!! I also love the fact that the lens as a programmable button on it which I use to transfer the camera to crop mode.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pronounced Vignette In low light conditions this lens has a pronounced vignette at 200mm and beyond. When paired with a teleconverter the vignetting is especially strong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it I just switched from Canon to Sony ( a7Rlll and a7Riv) I was using canon and Sony both and i have now three GM lenses 24-70, 85mm 1.4 & 100-400 i am a event photographer was looking to buy the 70-200 2.8GM unfortunately Adorama have pre order the 70-200 so i decided to go with 100-400 .. i was little bit worried about because of the 4.5-5.6 but i am very happy now it is really Amazing lens and super quality of the picutre, sharp and fast focus.. i am enjoying it ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant Lens A bit of a learning curve as this is my first long lens, previously I shot with the FE 70-200 F/4, which is an amazing lens in its own right, but when I get the focus correct, this lend absolutely delivers. I have since added the 1.4TC, and using an a7riii, in crop mode, 840mm shots of the moon are incredible. The only weakness is NOT having the dedicated lock-switch for the zoom. The resistance ring works well, but even at its tightest setting it does not stop lens creep. Really wish it would. And yes, it is expensive, but I don't know what could be done about that.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for video, otherwise great lens This is fantastic lens for photography with practically no compromises but if you look for wild life video lens, this one is not for you. image stabilizer is not optimized for video and achieving smooth footage even from tripod is impossible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp. Quick focus I have enjoyed this for several months and it lives up to my expectations. It is much better than my previous brand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Taking Photography to a new level have been taking pictures for 60 years, from a Kodak Brownie, to SLR, to SLT to mirrorless. This lens paired with the Sony A7Riii takes my photography to a new level. The lens is as sharp as any I have used. The optical Stabilization is unbelievable. Co-ordinated with the stabilization in the camera I can hand hold at 400mm for less than 1/100 of a second with out visible shake. It is clear that my 70 year old hands can't hold a 3 lb lens that steady but the stabilization of lets me do the impossible. If I had any negatives it would be the weight of the lens. But it is expected in a long lens of that quality. Also the fall off of the lens is less than I hoped for meaning I need to blur many shots in processing. (I never thought of complaining that a lens is too sharp). Sony has outdone itself with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp, light, love this lens I bought this lens instead of the 70-200 since I've always had 70-200's with other systems and have not regrets. Paired with my A7R3 this lens is even good for doing concert photography with marginal light. The only thing that could make this lens even better would be cutting the lens shoe to fit arca swiss, it'd be such an easy mod and if I still worked in a machine shop I'd have done it myself but instead bought an aftermarket foot to accomplish it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Product G Master FE 100-400 lens This lens is outstanding and gives you the versatility for photographing portraits to birds in flight. The lens is lite enough that you can take handheld pictures . I mostly photograph landscape and the versatility NYC skyline from NJ. And this lens has become my go to lens. I would recommend buying the 1.4 teleconverter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the tracking for the I bought this lens and the A7RIV a few weeks ago and have been very happy with the lens quality and the tracking. I shoot mostly wildlife and it seems like I am always in low light. From all the reviews I was reading I thought I would give it a try as my second camera and lens. I have a Nikon 850 with a 200-500 lens also with me at all times. It is hard to say which is my favorite at this time. I am excited to see how the Sony preforms in the next few months.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lemon The lens comes with the build quality I expect with regard to materials but I think I got a lemon because the picture quality is sub-par. Even from tripod and auto focus the pictures are not crisp. Sent in for repair twice now and waiting for second return to test the workmanship. I would like to think this lens was skipped during the manufacturing quality checks. I have several Sony lenses and this was the first time I had issues but will most definitely purchase again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome lens Great lens still adjusting to the weight, it has a great range of focal length. Some might say a little overkill for a a6400 but a must have for wildlife.
Date published: 2019-07-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Lens I purchased this Lens, along with the a6400 mirrorless camera, and I am getting some very sharp photos. I am pleased with this set up and would recommend for wildlife photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent in all aspects Finally a lens with effect stabilization and excellent optics. Years of using a variety of Canon super telephotos resigned me to thinking I could only get sharp images if I spent 10k dollars or more. This lens is perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Sony Lens Ever Super sharp! It's my favorite lens. Fast focusing and easy to use.
Date published: 2018-11-06
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great telephoto but a little husky! I bought this lens because I needed the focal range for my action photography. Nice sharp photos through out its focal range. Only thing I probably have to get used to is its heftiness at just over 3lbs.....that's me coming off an APS-C format camera setup with kit lenses that weigh much lighter. I guess this is where monopods and tripods will help. Lastly I think the price is a little on the high side when comparing it to other mfgs that have similar focal lengths and specs.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from R3_100-400GM I had this lens for couple months now and I've noticed the lens sometimes it won't focus. I have to turn off the camera and it the lens works again. I updated the software to the latest one available to download and that did not fix the problem. also, the manual focus to infinity is not calibrated correctly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best purchase Bought this to photograph my little ones, sports in the future and some nature/animal shots. Love to be far away and get their pure joyous smiling faces. Highly recommended if you didn’t mind the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent performance I am happy with performance, very sharp images at the right light of course. Bit slow but that what to expect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Quality!!! Rented this lens before buying and was extremely happy and impressed with speed and quality. Great for wildlife..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice clear photos Got this lens at the end of November and have really been enjoying it. Nice clear images. Little on the heavy side but still better than my Tamron lens. Most of my photos are birds and other wildlife. So glade Sony came out with a lens with good reach for my e-mount. On my smaller format a6500 it reaches out to 600mm. I’m a happy camper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great clarity I brought this in November and very happy with it’s performance. Very clear sharp images. I use it with my a6500 and the focusing is very fast. I photograph mostly wildlife.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens, except for Zoom tensioning method. Very sharp, especially for a long zoom. Tension ring not so great. After a few trips looking for birds, the zoom starts slipping. Now, after a couple of months, I have to move the lens back every few minutes when walking with the lens pointing down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens Bought this for taking photos of birds. It's fast and clear. I really like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressive After shooting with Nikon for 40 years, I just recently switched camera systems from Nikon to Sony. For starters, I bought the Sony a7Rii along with the Sony FE 24-70 F2.8 GM and Sony FE 100-400 F4.5-5.6 GM OSS. I have to say, I love this Sony system. The ease of capturing images, especially fast paced images, is surprisingly easy. The images attached were captured with the outstanding 100-400 GM. The focus system on the a7Rii never missed a beat with this fast moving Waverunner. The viewfinder is just incredible. I love being able to see exactly what I am capturing at the exact moment I pressed the shutter release. The detail of 42.5 MP's is unreal. My only regret is that I didn't switch systems sooner.
