Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Super Telephoto Zoom Lens

Zoom further with this Sony 200-600mm Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens with outstanding sharpness, fast AF and compact design. This lens features outstanding corner-to-corner sharpness throughout the 200-600mm zoom range. To achieve this outstanding G Lens resolution, it incorporates an aspherical element and five ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements in a new optical design to minimize chromatic aberration that can be a problem at super-telephoto focal lengths. In addition, Nano antireflective coating is used to reduce flare and ghosting.

200-600mm with Extended Reach

The lens features a versatile zoom range of 200-600mm with a variable aperture of f/5.6-6.3 (wide to tele). This incredible zoom range can be further extended using optional 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters that extend the telephoto reach up to a maximum 840mm (f/9) or 1200mm (f/13) respectively, while maintaining outstanding image quality and AF performance. The zoom and aperture range with the 1.4x teleconverter is 280-840mm, f/8-9 and with the 2.0x teleconverter is 400-1200mm, f/11-13.

DDSSM Delivers Fast, Precise, Quiet Autofocus

The lens employs Sony’s DDSSM (Direct Drive Supersonic Wave Motor) system which has the power and precision needed to drive the heavy focus group, ensuring that moving subjects are reliably and quietly tracked with exceptional speed and precision. High positioning accuracy means that pinpoint autofocus is achieved with blazing speed. The advanced DDSSM system is also exceptionally quiet, avoiding any unwanted noise that can disrupt an unpredictable subject like a resting bird or any other form of wildlife.

Internal Zoom Mechanism

An internal zoom mechanism means that the length of the lens remains constant while zooming, maintaining ideal balance for stable shooting. Since the lens zoom mechanism is internal, it also has a high resistance to dust and moisture unlike other super telephoto lenses that are typically prone to drawing dust and moisture into the lens. The internal zoom offers quick zoom operation with light zoom ring torque and is ideal in difficult outdoor conditions.

11-Blade Circular Aperture

An 11-blade circular aperture mechanism adds to the beauty of the bokeh produced by the lens, making it possible to use the narrow depth of field available at super-telephoto focal lengths to produce striking images with deep, creamy G Lens bokeh.

ED Glass Reduces Flare and Ghosting

ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements take axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration caused by differences in magnification, out of the picture. The 200-600mm G Super telephoto zoom lens incorporates one five ED glass elements to maximize resolution and bokeh, while leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural coloration.

Reduces Spherical Aberration

An aspherical lens is incorporated to dramatically reduce spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped aspherical elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, reducing overall size and weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FABULOUS REACH AND CLARITY I made a major change to a mirrorless camera and lenses and so glad to have made the investment. The camera is unbelievable and this lens is fabulous.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Let’s me take amazing pictures Bought this lens to take wildlife pictures. What a great job it does! The zoom is smooth and the lens feels great in my hands.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sony 200-600 Glad to have it but must confess that the anti shake on the lens isn’t as good as I thought it should be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect, but just a tad shy. I used this lens on an a9 body. Performance is good, but sharpness was just a tad below expectations. Granted for the price I can say it’s a good value and hit expectations. The design is big, but that’s to be expected. Mostly because the body of the lens doesn’t extend when zooming. This lead to a well balanced feel when shooting. Sometimes the sharpness was a bit below expectations, but it was far from unusable. In fact quite usable, and I think I’m wanting more from it than is realistic. Images come out with good details and unless you’re really cropping or zooming in you probably won’t tell a difference. The lens is HEAVY. I was tired before I turned the lens back in from using it. I would expect it to be heavy, but after the first hour it started to wear down. The IS on this lens performed very well, but still needs quite a fast shutter at 600mm. I found using 1/250th at 600 on an A9 ii body didn’t add any hand shake but any lower and it was noticeable. The AF motor was quick, and the limiter isn’t need for speed purposes but just to make sure you’re able to compose without it hunting the whole range. In full range a limited it was snappy and almost instant on the A9. Now, that being said all that is to be EXPECTED. The zoom range is massive. The lens has a narrow aperture. The internal zoom is massive. The lens is huge. For 2k, I shouldn’t expect more. It’s a great lens for pros and enthusiasts alike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice I bought this about a month ago and have been eager for the warmer weather to break, so that I can really get out and use it. I’ve taken some photos with it and I must say that I am pleased with its performance. The two places that I’ve recently visited are a metro park and a rodeo show. At both places, the lens did very well in my opinion. Now, the lens does have some weight to it and can become very strenuous for some after carrying it for an extended period of time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Lens for Sony A7rIV I bought this lens in November of 2020 and its the best purchase I have made in a long time. I use it mainly for Bird Phototography. The beautiful Bokehs I get are second to none. The clarity of the feathers are incredible. My Birds in Flight shots are also very clear and it works great with Sony A7rIV.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for the money Bought this a couple of months ago and images are tack sharp. A little heavy but still able to hand hold in certain lighting situations. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Buy for the money!! I've had this lens on my wishlist since it came out and finally bought one. Not the usual lens you would find in a wedding photographer's bag but glad I bought it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wildlife close up! I wanted a lens to use with my A7ii to get some closeups of animals. I have a 300-2.8 with a doubler is 5.6 this is a 6.3 with the ability to zoom out for shots. The focus is dead on. There are a couple photos I have taken with it. Judge for your self:

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such a sharp lens! I expected this to be a great lens, but it is better than that! Focus is quick, and quiet. Very happy I bought it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from poor tripod collar design. The loaner 200-600 suffers from the same problem as my copy . You have an issue with tripod collar loosening making the lens unstable and un able to use on a monopod or tripod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Birding Lens! The perfect lens for birding! This lens has really helped me up my game in regards to birding. I'm getting shots I never could have imagined now. If you can afford it . . . get this lens! If you can't afford it . . . start saving up for it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Monster of a lens but does the Job This lens will put some serious weight on your camera but it does get the job done. I do not use a tripod. It would get in the way for shooting wildlife where you more often than not have to follow the action. I use it on the Sony ARIV. It is nice and sharp. My gripes are that the lens hood does not attach securely. I lost it on my second outing while hiking. Sony could provide a longer strap for the lens. Finally the supplied lens bag could be a lot better. What is important is that I have no gripes about the lens. Make sure you try this lens before purchasing it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lens ever! This lens is absolutely awesome. Amazingly fast focus, crisp photos, and beautiful bokah. And, truth be told, I bought this lens a month ago after the exact same lens met with an untimely accident after 2 years. I can't live without it! I love the fact that the barrel of the lens does not move. Everything is internal which makes for a smooth transition. I shoot hand held and, yes, this is a heavy lens but nothing I can't handle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Received yesterday and went out today to try it on an a6300 camera. Very impressed with how Quick and responsive this lens is. Light enough to hand hold and shoot. To me worth the money. Most shots at 100 yards and more. Very pleased!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Explorations! After watching many reviews on YouTube I decided to get this lens to use with my A7R IV. I saw that many shooters have issues with soft focus and motion blur in low light. I really don't shoot wildlife in low light so that's not an issue for me. I've been on many tours and a couple of safaris and they all took place in early morning light to bright sun, so I think that I'll be OK in the future. I'll have to get a monopod because the lens gets heavy after a while, but the results to me are well worth it. I love that the barrel doesn't extend and the lens is very well built. I need more practice getting used to photographing wildlife and also remembering and knowing when to use the different modes/buttons on the lens. I'M HAPPY with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Operate and Nice Reach I like this lens a lot and the optics are very good, but I don't think they're as good as the Nikon 200-500mm lens I shot with previously. The optics on both lenses are very good, but in my opinion, the Nikon 200-500 is just a little better than the Sony 200-600. Don't get me wrong. I'm very happy with my purchase of the 200-600 and would buy it all over again; just for the extra reach if offers and how much better Sony lenses and cameras work with extenders / teleconverters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Initial review of 200-600 Had purchased this lens 200-600 back in Aug 2020, initial the pictures were crisp and clear until I updated the a7r4 FE to 1.2. I have to struggle more now to make sure all elements are in sync. Lighting, environmental, shutter, aperture, ISO. To be able to capture the crisp and clear pic. I have shot numerous BIF pictures an the capture rate is approx 20% overall. Static Landscapes shots are much better than flying birds. Overall I would rate this lens an 7-8 out of 10

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Telephoto len I bought this telephoto lens one month ago and is the best telephoto lens I used. I recomend this len to every photographer want to have sharp pictures for animals far distances from you or water extreme sports that you need to be outside in the sand. I used the len for both types of photos and the result is very impressive. The only thing is that the len is little heavy but you can fix this so quickly with a tripod or monopod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expanded my enjoyment Owned for @ a year, with the A7iii have had more fun with bird and wildlife photography. Can hand hold for about an hour. Have a very good setup with a Jobu gimbal on a tripod. BlueJay taken recently in Northern Minnesota.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beware if you are pairing with Ar7IV There is an issue I and many others are having only when using this lens with the Ar7iv. Firmware update has not addressed soft focus and sharpness on stationary objects. Appears to work fine for many however there is an issue not is not being caused by the settings.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great zoom lens Pluses: Small, light, affordable Internal zooming solid build Sharp optics Fast zooming IQ still good with 1.4TC Minuses: No Arca on tripod mount Heavy hood causing front lens element to detach Could be sharper AFC slower than 100-400mm and primes Bokeh so so too dim is used with 2X TC Not sure of differences with OIS modes
Date published: 2020-08-21
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value for the money... A great value compared to the next closest 100-400 lens. The images came out sharp all the way up to 600mm. With a tripod bracket on the lens, it's easy to align the horizon and switch between horizontal & vertical for landscape shots. The auto focus tend to be slow and sometimes unreliable for a lens this size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a Fantastic Lens !!! I first rented this lens for a weekend. When I returned it I wanted to have a little fun so I told the guy I didn't get one good picture. He was quite surprised and said "really ??? " Then I told him I actually got a couple thousand GREAT pictures :) So I then returned the rented lens & walked out with a new one. Getting this photo of the moon was what made me decide to buy this lens And here is a cropped in pic of the head of a Sandhill Crane

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Image quality is outstanding! I am using this lens on the A6300. I don't know why I waited so long to buy it. I was content with my Sony 70-300 but just couldn't fill the frame with my subject sometimes. The 200-600 FILLS the frame. I have used it exclusively handheld and couldn't be happier with the results. Make no mistake this is a 600mm lens and feels every one of its four pounds. But after several days of practice I feel comfortable with it. Two important points: learn to use the zone focus for birds in flight and flexible spot small for stationary animals. Even with the lowly a6300 this lens just plain works.
