Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Alpha E-Mount Retractable Zoom Lens

Sony's 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Alpha E-mount Retractable Zoom Lens is a powerful retractable zoom lens. It offers a 35mm equivalent focal range of 24-75mm. It covers shooting lengths from true wide angle to standard portrait length and is a great day-to-day type lens, especially since its unique retractability keeps it very compact. When powered on, the lens expands, but in its off position the lens is only 1.2-inch (30mm) which will fit in your pocket. When expanded, it has a surprisingly large zoom range and access to its dual-function control ring for manual focus and zooming. Its Power Zoom capability in AF mode and Internal Stepping Motor provide, fast, smooth and quiet autofocus which is helpful when shooting video with this lens.

Circular Aperture

When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass

As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration.

Aspherical Lens Elements

Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped aspherical elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight. Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements are an evolved variant, featuring an extremely high thickness ratio between the center and periphery. AA elements are exceedingly difficult to produce, relying on the most advanced molding technology to consistently and precisely achieve the required shape and surface accuracy, resulting in significantly improved image accuracy and quality.

Distance Encoder

The distance encoder plays an integral part in ADI flash metering, which delivers high precision flash metering that is unaffected by the reflectance of subjects or backgrounds. The distance encoder is a lens component that directly detects the position of the focusing mechanism, and sends a signal to the CPU in order to measure distance to the subject. During flash photography, this data is very useful in calculating how much flash output is appropriate to the scene.

Lens-Based Optical Image Stabilization

Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.

Internal Focusing

Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.

Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Alpha E-Mount Retractable Zoom Lens SKU: SELP1650

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens For Potrait Pictures! This lens came with my A6000. It's a great lens for parties, portraits, families, etc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens This lens is part of the kit lens that comes on the a6000. Reviews have indicated the front part of the lens has a little bit of play in it. Mine appears to have this issue but it doesn't appear to effect the operation of the lens or image quality. So far image quality is good. zoom is smooth. If you purchase this lens get a 40.5mm UV or haze filter to protect it. It is cheaper to replace this glass then spend a lot more buy a new lens.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cannot recognize lens Did love the camera the 4x I ever used it. I bought it for vacation and I'm sure I used it a hand full of times. I never dropped it and one day when I turned on the camera, it was not reading the lens. I cleaned it and even looked up reviews of other people having the same issue.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from KAPUT after 4 months Sony 16-50 mm Kit Lens S/N S013493648N (Model SELP 1650) Recently after taking 187 fotos through the 16-50mm lens at a Highland Festival in Florida I turned off the camera and a bit later when I turned the camera back on I got this msg-- "Cannot recognize lens Attach it properly" I had not removed the lens in the interval it was off & the battery had at least 50% charge, so I detached the lens tried again, same msg. I removed the lens and attached the 55-210mm and it functioned properly, no msg and it took fotos. I have repeated these steps with a fully charged battery at home with the identical results.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from FLASH IS WONKY DOESN'T ALWAY WORK I HAVE SO DISAPPOINTED AFTER OWNING SEVERAL OTHER Sony CAMERAS. including the mauvica which used a disk. DOWN TO THE DETAIL OF THE LENS CAP DOES NOT HAVE A TETHER AND CAN BE SO EASILY LOST AND REPLACEMENT IS EXPENSIVE.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible lens This is the lens which comes in the kit. Although the focal length is very useful, the inability to add a lens hood or filter although fitted with a threaded front makes this lens useless. I had the lens back to warranty twice, both times they found nothing wrong. the third time they replaced the lens with a new one and I'm sure the problems will continue. I had hoped that this would be the camera I could travel with for years to come but now I feel I need to search for a company who provides good products. Oh, by the way, I am not a disgruntled amateur photographer, spent many years as a stringer for a large newspaper and 27 years in Forensic Science investigating homicides etc. and everything in forensics must be photographed. I also taught photography at the college level.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great camera, but one big con The quality is AMAZING!! However, one of the biggest cons for me is that, I do youtube videos so when I'm filming my vidoes tend to be a little long and the camera does overheat and cut off after about 15 mins or so.Therefore I have to record (and then edit) my videos in pieces. Other than that, this camera is the best.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sony Lens the 55-210mm optical Steady Shot When I purchased this last month I was truly excited for the purchase I made, mainly because I knew these lens are quite pricey, but they are worth every dollar! I'm now a proud owner of the 55-210mm lens from Sony! And truly can't wait to try out a prime lens!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mixed Feelings - a little more con than pro Photo : This was my first kit lens that I got with by NEX6 camera. Its good outside daylight and produces crisp images. But indoors with reasonable lighting and evening/night this lens is a nightmare. All I see is black on the screen even with max aperture of 3.5 without compromising shutter speed or ISO (which ruins the quality of the image). Don't even try using the 50mm length for portraits and bokeh shots unless you have a tons and tons of light. Thats what the 50mm 1.8 lens is for (5 stars). I will give it credit for variable zoom however, and it gets good landscapes (lot of light required again) and long exposures are decent. Video: I imagine more videographers using this lens. The variable zoom is a plus and on auto you can get bright shots as the camera adjusts iso/shutter accordingly. The electronic power zoom noise is DISGUSTING and takes over the audio when you zoom in during a shot, thus i can see this one con ruining anyone using it for video (unless you decide to not use audio). The lens is nice and small and very lightweight too. It was frustrating using this kit lens for a long time, then I finally upgraded to 50mm 1.8 and never looked back. I love portrait/bokeh photography and the 50mm 1.8 is a very specific lens. I came back to this 16-50 and was able to appreciate what its strengths are though. But the lack of a fast aperture left a lot to be desired.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from poor quality but compact Got this as my first zoom lens for my sony camera. I only have prime lenses and I needed a zoom lens. Went on vacation in orlando and just took a ton of pictures at my son graduation. Compared to the prime lenses the quality on this one is pretty much disappointing and horrible. Lens is clean. Everything is always soft and nearly blurry.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good beginner lens It is a good beginners lens, and that just about where this lens would market well with. If your the typical point and shoot person, this is the lens for you. Also a good lens for people who travel a lot. Pros: It’s a small compact lens, has OSS, good for video, has a decent focal range from wide angle to about a portrait. Cons: Not the fastest lens, not good for night/dark photography, images are okay quality

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Camera is too new to form an opinion. I'm still getting used to the controls on the camera, AND the PlayMemories, which was an unpleasant surprise.
Date published: 2017-12-22
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sharp lens but build quality is sub par. I will say that for a kit lens it is sharp but the barrel is very loose for a brand new lens I don't know if it is every on or just the lens I got.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great kit lens This lens is probably the best way to go as your initial lens. It comes as a kit in most cases and is a great way to get a feel for the camera and photography before investing too much into the platform. It's not the sharpest lens but, for whats basically a kit, its pretty good. It is capable of utilizing the ClearView zoom that to go beyond the 16-50mm range in lieu of a longer zoom until you can purchase another lens for that reach. It also has built-in stabilization which helps on the a6000/a6300 which don't have sensor stabilization in the camera body. One of the best things about the lens is how compact it is. It's very easy to slip the camera with the lens on in a bag or a jacket pocket and take it with you for the day.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor built quality I would have love loving it but unfortunately I can't. I bought this as an everyday portable lens but it got broken after a month or so. The side zoom lever got broken while detaching, carefully enough, the lens from the body revealing the poor built quality. Two ultra-thin (probably 0.5 mm) plastic pins poorly hold up the button to the lens. A part that: -It has a really heavy vignette (that can be corrected in camera). -The zoom lever is obviously electronic and it is quite slow I guess for video use. -The zoom ring is electronic too. Is is a lot faster than the lever but it has a delay anyway, but not a huge deal. -The optical quality is good though. It is true that is a cheap one but be extremely cautious using and storing this lens. I don't know what's the point of building something portable that's so fragile? I come from Canon DSLR and I never experienced anything like this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great for short range with good lighting I recently bought the Sony A5100 mirror less camera for my 11 day trip to Italy. I took 2500 photos. This lens came with it. I just loved the ease of use, the size, the weight and everything about operating it. When it came time to share pictures with others, I realized that my pictures did not measure up to several of the other people who came on the trip. Short distance and good lighting - The pics were awesome Long distance and/or low lighting - It really lacked a lot. Although most of my pictures were short distances, I am really really disappointed in the lense. I am currently looking to somehow update the lense.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great vide quality I got this lens with the camera and I definitely recommend it. It does a little bit of what every lens does.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Still trying to get crisp photos I am excited to begin working with my ICLE-a6300. I am still testing how to take crisp photos but am not yet satisfied with the end results. If I can master all of the core cameras features I will be very happy. My overall rating will go to five at that time.
