Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Standard Zoom Lens

Canon's EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens is an advanced zoom lens designed for superb performance and high-end durability. It offers both 35mm Film or Canon APS-C format compatibility. Canon has packed this lens with tons of professional grade features including one Super UD lens element and two UD lens elements in its optical design that work to drastically reduce chromatic aberrations at the edges of the wide-angle perspective.

Canon L Series

The L Series denotes Canon's professional line of lenses. Though used extensively by non-professionals, these lens have been engineered to the highest of standards. These luxury lenses incorporate such advanced optical advantages as Super Low Dispersion Glass, Ultra-Low Dispersion Glass, flourite elements and aspherical design elements. All of these combine to produce reliably incredible images.

Fluorine Coating

Canon L Series lenses feature a fluorine coating on the front and rear surfaces. This coating helps to greatly reduce smears, smudges or fingerprints ensuring that you will always take impeccable images.

Ultra Sonic Motor (USM)

Canon's USM lenses employ a motor powered by ultrasonic waves that produce a quiet, yet high-speed AutoFocus. You can enjoy high performance with low noise in a variety of shooting situations.

Anti-Reflective Coating

The Canon anti-reflective coating is an optical design feature which ensures superior clarity and image brilliance, even in poor or unfavorable lighting conditions. Canon applies the anti-reflective coating through a special process, layering the lens surface in order to substantially reduce unwanted flare or ghosting. This process helps to ensure incredibly rich image contrast and true color fidelity.

Aspherical Design

Canon's aspherical lens design creates a more complex surface profile. This helps to greatly reduce spherical and other optical aberrations. The design further ensures consistent imaging performance throughout the entire focal range, while delivering incredible sharpness up to the periphery of the image.

Manual Focus

Manual focusing means you have all the control at the end of your fingers. Canon lenses feature a specially designed ergonomic construction that is noticeable at first touch. The large rotation angle of this lens guarantees precise focusing. The mechanism moves super smoothly and without extra play, furthering the intuitive interaction along the focal plane.

Advanced Aperture Design

The circular aperture produces a natural background blur. With Canon lenses you can create stunning Bokeh effects, thanks to the finely tuned features and advanced optical design. By keeping the background intentionally blurred, additional focus is created on the subject of an image. The uniquely engineered diaphragm blades of this lens, along with the virtually circular aperture, deliver stunning renditions of highlights the back and foreground.

Ultra Low Dispersion Glass (UD)

Canon's Low Dispersion technology is engineered to reduce chromatic aberrations, eliminating the tendency of light of different colors to focus to different points at the image plane. This means your images will come out crisp and clear, with less of a chance of defracting light into an unwanted rainbow of colors. Take shots exactly like you want, without any flare-up or blurring.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Standard Zoom Lens

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Standard Zoom Lens SKU: 5175B002

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very sharp lens but need a tripod My all time favorite Canon lens is 70-200 f/2.8 ii which has IS. And all other lenses I always bench mark against this favorite lens for sharpness, focus etc. Having said that where does 24-70 f/2.8 ii stack? (one of telephoto and other is standard zoom the comparison has to be fair DOF between both the lens) 24-70 f/2.8 ii is a very sharp lens only when we use with tripod. I have been using this lens with 5DMIV. I have accepted the truth when the lens does not have IS and the body does not have IS either tripod is a must. If one is okay to use the tripod this lens will not disappoint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Lens!! Absolutely love this lens! Perfect for shooting wedding ceremonies in tight spaces that I need the wider angle but can also zoom in closer for the detail shots without changing my lens. I had the 24-105 f/4, and the f/2.8 with this lens is a game changer!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM I don’t need to carry another lens. Shooting in low light without flash and in auto was very good but shooting manual was excellent. I waited years for the upgrade which never materialized.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing versatility Such a great lens to have! A little vignetting (6dmkii) but other than that takes amazing photos. Quiet auto focus. Overall very high quality product worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super sharp pics I purchased this lens along with the 70-200 with IS. I purchased them to photograph horses, the pictures have been amazing especially since I shoot indoors in low light and my subjects are typically moving quite fast. The 70 - 200 is great when you are a little further away, the 24 - 70 is best when you have the opportunity to get in closer to the horse and rider. I look forward to buying the 16-35 mm lens. The lenses are not cheap, but, as they say you get what you pay for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 24-70 lens Use this one for group photos are even nature ones. Bought this one at Christmas when one was using stopped working. Not sure what’s up, but this one was on my wish list. Crisp pictures, great range. Overall great purchase and happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp. Sharper. Sharpest. I’m beginning to understand why every review is full of superlatives. Sharp, bright, great contrast, fast focus. The only thing more that you could ask for is image stabilization.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Sharp Lens with Great Low Light Capabilities Had this lens for six months now and tried it in various situations. I am happy with the pictures I get. Been receiving good comments on them from friends and family too. I’ve used it during my latest travels and it was the only lens I needed to bring. Takes good pictures even in dim museums and cathedrals without the need to use my flash equipment. Worth the cost!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A perfect balance of performance, build, and IQ Fantastic AF performance, image quality, and the build is SOLID. I have no complaints with this lens. Works great in low light. Distortion is pretty low and easy to correct with panoramic stitching. Pretty much edge-to-edge sharp with very slight detail loss at the farthest fringes at the widest zoom angle. There is some flare sometimes like other users comment on, but it has not bothered me at all. A+ lens

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome standard zoom I shoot many fast paced events where timing is key to capture moments as they unfold in a natural way without subjects realizing I'm there. The 24-70 II fits those needs completely with fast, accurate autofocus, sharp rendering, punchy images and a reasonable zoom range that gets me just close enough to capture action as it unfolds. I've been quite pleased with the performance of this lens on the event floor and noticed an increase in my keeper rate versus my previous Sigma lens. This lens really has held its own in low light events paired with the 6D.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the finest The build quality of this lens is apparent the moment you hold it. It's heavier than it looks and feels refreshingly solid. The resistance on the manual focus ring is satisfyingly smooth requiring no more or less force than you'd ever want for tuning quickly and precisely at the same time. The heft of the lens is most apparent when zooming and becomes more obvious when it's pointed upwards (gravity and stuff). The wonderful thing is how the lens manages to hold it's place when pointed DOWNward. Although there is a zoom lock, after a year and a half of use I have yet to experience any lens drop even after traveling with the camera shouldered for long walks. The AF is super snappy and uncanny in its accuracy especially when using center point focus. On a 6D body, it is impressively reliable in low-light situations. Only the flattest, no-contrast circumstances seem to offer any AF issues. Image quality is superb and more likely to be bottle-necked by the camera its on rather than by the lens itself. It still blows my mind that even under the worst circumstances chromatic aberration never seems to existent. Truly it's the Excalibur of standard zoom lenses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An excellent lens... needs an upgrade An excellent lens. However has chromatic aberrations that are very apparent. It would be nice for Canon to come out with an improved version that corrects this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing Better in a 24-70 2.8 I've been using this since Sept. of 15 & my goodness! I've had the tammy 3 different times but the softness was oh so present on each & it shot better with VC off, so I figured why not spend the bucks & try the Canon & guess what I haven't regretted it one bit:) There is nothing per dollar in this range that will beat it bar none:)) Love it!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens! I bought this lens about 8 months ago and it's been hard to take it off my camera ever since. Previously, my go-to lens was the 70-200mm 2.8 IS L series but I wanted something wider that would give me equal image quality and the 24-70 has not disappointed me yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Series II L Lenses I recently went on a shoot with Canon where they were allowing us to use the recently released "L" Series II lenses. While I was very happy with my series I lenses the difference in sharpness was incredible. Since I am planning on upgrading to the new Series 5ds when it is available in June I was sure that I would need to upgrade to the series II lenses. I've now made the transition to the 16-35, 24-70, 100-400 lenses in anticipation of the new 5ds body. These lenses are just INCREDIBLE. Very, very sharp! Not inexpensive, but just like computers "Garbage IN, Garbage OUT".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens. Very Sharp, but over priced and no IS. I'm considering going third-party lenses. I cannot imagine the PRICE of the future 24-70 F2.8 L USM "IS" "I" or "II" when it comes out. Make the lenses more affordable so people won't go anywhere else to get them. You are loosing big time on this issue!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Class Lens, Simply the Best My review of the EF 24-70mm F/2.8 II USM. This lens is simply the best standard zoom lens on the market. When you first hold this lens in your hand, you know you are holding a powerful and valuable object of the finest digital imaging technology. The build quality is rigid, solid, and sleek. The lens filter is surprising large compared to most lenses at 82mm diameter. It has a lock switch only at 24mm, AF & MF mode switch, focus ring and focal length ring. Aside from the exterior technical details, the 24-70mm depicts some of the most beautiful, gorgeous and stunning colors that I have ever seen a lens can produce. Some may ask, can this lens really be that good and worth high price tag? Some may ask, can't I just get away with an affordable lens? It certainly depends on your photography goals, but if you want the sharpest, cleanest shots to enhance your skill to the professional grade level, this is the lens. After hemming and hawing for months over whether I should buy this lens or not, I made the leap of faith, and I must honestly say that I don't regret it. In fact, unless I'm using my super telephoto lens, this lens practically is glued to my 7D Mark II now as my all around go to standard zoom lens. The only thing I wish Canon could improve on the quality of the lens hood. It feels too 'plastic'. I really do like the quality of the older lens hoods from years ago with more solid harder plastic material. The saving grace with the new lens hood is that it has nice lock switch. In conclusion, the 24-70mm is a first class lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens! This lens is truly exceptional. Some may think this lens is only for the pros but any shooter can benefit from such a fast piece of glass. It is very expensive but well worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best lens I have ever used. Canons 24-70mm II, is the best lens I have ever used from the Canon line-up of lens. I am purchasing 50mm 1.2, & 85mm 1.2, and 135mm f2, s for my Wedding Photography, but I can't wait to see if these lens stack up to my copy of the new Canon lens?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the money? I am an advanced amateur hobbyist that recently upgraded to 5D MkIII from Canon 7D w/ EF-S 17-55mm f2.8, so I thought i'd save a nickel and get the XXX Brand 24-70MM f/2.8 but when I got it on the camera it had really bad vignetting. I was used to the previous set up that had almost no vignetting. So back to the brick & mortar store it went. Got my refund and ordered this lens. After two days of test shots I am convinced that this lens far and away out performs the XXX Brand (at least for someone with my skill set). I believe that great pros can make a coke bottle work as a lens but amateurs need a great piece of glass like this lens to help us compensate. The first test I did was directly at the sun on a very bright sunny day and man what a difference over my old setup. Canon got this right and this lens makes a great combo with the 70-200mm f2.8 IS II.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but not great This is a good lens and it serves its purpose but it could be a great lens. It desperately needs IS. The corners are not very sharp and noticable vignetting at 24mm, especially on a FF, like teh 5D3. It is really sharp at 70mm. Nothing so bad that it cannot be corrected on PP, but out of all my Canon lenses and time using Canon products, this lens is not one of my favorites, It gets used but not as much as my 24-105 f4 IS.
Date published: 2014-01-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One lens to last me. If I must choose just one lens, this is the one I will pick. This lens will go anywhere anytime I go. Best multi-purpose lens.
Date published: 2014-01-13
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I've always shot with prime lenses but I really needed something versatile and purchased this lens. I'm very satisfied with the performance and picture quality that I get as this is mounted to my 5D Mark 3. As for the price, I think it's way too expensive especially considering that the closure is made of plastic unlike the first versions which is made of metal. This is why I gave the rating of 2 stars in quality because the plastic closure doesn't justify the L Series of this lens. I also believe it isn't weather sealed either but I could be wrong. But it's made in Japan if that means anything. Overall, I'm satisfied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was blown away After talking to several photographers and reading several reviews I decided to sell my old 24-70 lens and purchase the new lens. Well I quickly learned that evertning that I had heard about this lens was true. Sharpness, color, contrast and focus speed was amazing. It was hard to beleive that it was better than my old 24-70 but it was. The only thing that I miss is the huge lens hood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extraordinary Lens The new 24-70 f2.8 L II is absolutely a great lens! Its sharpness is excellent + even better than my 70-200 f2.8 L II IS and auto focus speed and accuracy and also build quality is superb! i have been using this one about a month and i m really satisfied with buying this lens. The only negative point is its price which is so expensive! But believe me it s worth to buy and you will be definitely satisfied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Several prime lenses in one Photography has been my hobby for over 20 years. I am not a pro. In order to evaluate a new lens, I shoot everyday life instead of brick walls. This lens is sharp wide open at F2.8. You do not need to stop it down to increase sharpness. This is what I love about this lens. It is like having several prime lenses in one package. I used the 35L and 50mm F1.4 for several years. They are good lenses. But I had to stop them down from F1.4 to F2.0 or F2.8 to get sharp images. The combination of this lens on a 5D3 are heavy. Carrying them around for a full day is not easy. Despite the weight, I still wish it had image stabilization. Its autofocusing is very good, although it is not any better than the autofocusing of the 35L or 135L or 300mm F4L. But then again, I haven't done any scientific measurements. This is all based on my everyday use. The bokeh is "good". Although I much prefer the bokeh of the 135L. Shooting into bright lights is surprisingly good. Overall, I love this lens. I don't like the high price though. But if you think of it as several high quality prime lenses in one, I guess that can justify the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A definitive contender... If your still doing homework on a lens of this caliber and price tag, then my review should only add confidence in a purchase. The build is of rigid and pretty standard professional grade expectations added the weather seal for environmental elements. I shouldn't be noted but common sense applies to complete the seal with a filter as stated in the manual. Im old fashioned and like the heft and feel, i could ask for better containment than engineered plastic, how about t-6061 aluminum?? Maybe then no one would complain about a price-tag. Furthermore, the optics are just phenomenal, from 24-70 if you use the focal length respectfully. Sharp, sharp, sharp and not afraid to use it wide open in any circumstance. Slightest distortion but critical in studio. Focus and zoom execute excellent and comfortable turns. simply a pleasure and all around contender.
