Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Lens

Weighing in at less than 7 ounces, the lightweight Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 “normal” prime lens delivers an outstanding blend of performance, compactness and value, making it a perfect choice for hobbyist photographers and videographers looking to experience the benefits of a wide aperture prime lens at an attainable cost. The lens features a new optical design with an aspherical element that effectively compensates for all forms of aberration, resulting in beautiful, crisp imagery. Additionally, it has a circular aperture with a maximum of f/1.8, producing beautiful ‘bokeh’ in images that allows the subject to stand out against a smoothly defocused background. For extended durability, the new prime lens is built with a solid metal mount.

In the world of photography the 50mm lens is the absolute must-have for any collection. This lens has a fixed focal range of 50mm and is absolutely perfect for an array of uses such as portrait, wedding, detail shots, beautifully manipulated depth-of-field shots and so much more. By keeping the focal range fixed, this lens allows for a much wider aperture range, this is what allows for the depth-of field focus manipulation and the wonderful shots where the subject-matter is crisp and clear while the background is a beautiful blur.

Smooth Defocusing

The f/1.8 maximum aperture opens up a world of beautiful prime-lens bokeh. The large f/1.8 maximum aperture is also an advantage when shooting night scenes or in dimly lit interiors. When used with an α series camera body that features in-body image stabilization, even greater low-light capability enables handheld capture of clear images in dark scenes without having to use excessively high ISO sensitivity.

Refined Optical Performance

The lens has an innovative optical design to achieve clear, high-quality images by effectively minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration. A double-Gauss configuration effectively suppresses field curvature and distortion, while a precisely placed aspherical element controls spherical aberration and coma for excellent optical characteristics right out to the image periphery. An aspherical element in a new optical design controls all types of aberration (spherical, coma, distortion), rendering the subject with superior sharpness.

DC Motor Focus

A new DC motor drive system has been carefully designed and implemented for optimum focus precision and speed as well as quiet operation. This system provides the same smoothness for autofocus and manual focus control. Note: Focus motor sound may be recorded when shooting movies.

7-Blade Circular Aperture

The 7-blade circular aperture maximizes the beauty of large-aperture prime-lens, contributing to impressive images in which the subject stands out against a smoothly defocused background bokeh.

Solid Durability

Designed for reliability in a wide range of environments, the metal mount adds a sophisticated feel as well as solid durability.

Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Lens

Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Lens SKU: SEL50F18F

Rated 1 out of 5 by from junk Makes terrible video. Does not focus well. Focus is too slow for video. Maybe okay for photos, but not video. Get a different lens. The Sony mirrorless cameras deserve better than this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unhappy I bought this about 3 1/2 months ago and the F stop showed up with dash lines and made the picture blurry. I'm not happy with this. Something so new should not look blurry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for the price! Bought it a month ago. Very sharp at the center even at f1.8. Great value for the price but the AF is a little slow sometimes and hunts in low light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Bokeh, good autofocus I bought this camera for my Sony aps-c camera. This is my first purchase of any lens. I am really impressed by the picture quality. And the best thing I liked is the Bokeh that this lens can produce.Price is a little high as compared to Canon 50mm lens.In my opinion, the size of the lens is a little big for a 50mm lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice little back up lens Even though I am not the biggest fan of prime lenses, I enjoy shooting at this focal length very much. I got it on sale and it's a nice little back up to my 24-70 in case anything were to happen to that lens. I've taken this lens out for a few shoots around my town and it was a pleasure to shoot with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good all around lens So much fun and great in low light. You save a lot over getting the 1.4 which may be what you want if your a pro but everyone should have a fifty regardless of where you are at in your photo journey.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for a great price Bought in November and keep using it as it is so light and produces great photos! A must have for any Sony a7 owner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast and sharp lens This 50mm is a fast and sharp lens. I bought this to have another option to shoot besides the kit lens and so far I like it a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest single addition to your A7 camera bag! A fast prime lens is the greatest single addition you can add to your Sony A7 camera bag. This lens will allow you to should with shallow depth-of-field to obtain nice soft backgrounds that help delineate your subject. Essential for available light photography. Love this lens with manual focus assist to nail sharpness in the important details. A bargain!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing value for money After frustration from the kit lens in achieving those creamy bokeh portrait images, I figured I needed this lens. Best decision ever. For this reduced price you're getting some quality glass that has sharp focus, super crisp images, is incredible in low light, and gets those creamy bokeh shots for portraits or any other object. You do have to do the "zooming" with your feet however, but I couldn't ask for more. For this price and what this lens has to offer it is a must have in any persons camera bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value nifty 50! This lens is a really good value and functions great in well lit situations.
Date published: 2018-06-06
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good all-purpose lens, but slow and noisy focus The Sony 50mm F1.8 is great for general purpose use. But the focusing mechanism is very noisy and slow reminiscent of an ancient AF lens. It also doesn't focus well in low light, despite having a fairly large F1.8 aperture. The lens produces pleasing bokeh and works well in bright light, just don't expect top-dollar fast prime performance. The lens is made of 100% plastic and is super light, that might be a pro (for travel or backup) or a con (fragile, less durable) for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Value Nifty 50 Coming from both Nikon/Canon and being that the 50mm f1.8 is the work horse of my work, I can honestly say this is the highest quality first party models I have ever used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nice little lens I've owned this lens for 3+ yrs and can tell you it is very sharp,,, I don't know if the others are as sharp or sharper because I don't own them! As far as focus distance, I have focused { manually} at 5-6" so their 1.2' distance in the spec's could be off, so you could use it as a macro lens as far as I'm concerned! I do think it does a better job if you manually focus it but even in auto it does a great job! It does seem to be a little sharper at F4! It's also a very small and light lens as well!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great portraits lens This lens is incredible for the price. Truly a nifty fifty. This was my first prime lens I bought and I didn’t regret it. Lens is a good focal length for portraits and with the f1.8 creates creamy bokeh. It is a good bang for the buck in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Useful Prime The apsc 50mm matches the field of fiew of the view finder of both the a6000 and the a7s perfectly. The OSS works well with the a7s. It’s a useful prime to use with a apsc sensor or a cropped 35mm sensor. With a 1.4x crop factor it produces images with an equivilent field of view as a 70mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE This was my first lense purchase outside the 16-50mm the Sony a6000 comes with. It has taken some amazing pictures for me so far!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Latest firmware update is awfull Hi! I have updated firmware for this lens to version 3 and faced with really slow autofocus. It's not usable anymore - it's slow and not accurate. Tested on my A7 body and NEX-6 cropped body. Is it possible to downgrade lens firmware update to ver.2 ? Any suggestions?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from sharp, lightweight & inexpessive... this is a good all around lens for the value... it's sharp at 1.8 comparable to other 50mm. lightweight cuase it's made of high quality plastic material; don't drop it; but it hunts most of the time...good for hunters. I use this in my A7ii.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent pictures and video I am no expert in photography, but this lens is very easy to use and gives some awesome pictures from the first day of use without too much digging about how to use it. I would totally recommend this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value Mid distance shots this camera shines. Landscape is a bit weaker as images tend to moire a bit at edges & fringe overall a great first lens investment!
