Sony 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS E-Mount Lens for Sony E (Black)

Sony's SEL55210 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 Lens offers a long telephoto zoom lens with 3.8x magnification. The equivalent of 82-315mm in full-frame or 35mm format, this lens has a versatile short-to-long telephoto range. Its Internal focusing feature gives you smooth, responsive autofocus, with minimum noise - perfect for capturing video. With a telephoto lens, image stabilization is very important to prevent camera shake. Optical SteadyShot gives you the ability to capture sharp, crisp images (still or video) even in low light or when zooming into distant subjects. Two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements help to suppress chromatic aberration color bleeding at all focal lengths, so you have excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. It creates a 28.2 - 7.8 degrees angle of view, a 3.28-feet minimum focusing distance, and accepts 49mm filters. This is a lens that you'll want to keep handy at all times for dramatic long-range images.

SteadyShot Image Processor

Sony's Alpha DSLR cameras are designed with the SteadyShot Image Stabilization inside the camera body itself. This means that the lenses that you attach to them don't require the added bulk of a IS system. The result is a lighter and more streamlined lenses that does not require the added weight of the mechanics.

Focusing

Sony's Internal Focusing feature allows you to focus a lens without changing its size. With IF Lenses all optical movement is restricted to the interior of the lens barrel, providing for a lighter, more efficient design. Faster focusing is produced by a lighter and compact focusing lens group.

Direct Manual Focus with non-rotating focus ring during AF: ideal for precise, comfortable manual focus adjustments

Extra Low Dispersion Glass (ED)

Sony's Low Dispersion technology is engineered to reduce chromatic aberrations, which becomes more of a problem as focal lengths get longer. By eliminating the tendency of light of different colors to focus to different points at the image plane. This means your images will come out crisp and clear, with less of a chance of defracting light into an unwanted rainbow of colors. Take shots exactly like you want, without any flare-up or blurring.

Aspherical Element

Sony's aspherical lens design creates a more complex surface profile, while also reducing lens size and weight. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, translating to high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight. The design further ensures consistent imaging performance throughout the entire focal range, while delivering incredible sharpness up to the periphery of the image.

7-Blade Circular Aperture

The circular aperture of this lens creates pleasing natural Bokeh effects. While Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocused points of light. This lens overcomes this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops.

Lens-based optical image stabilization

Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Entry Level that is Respectable I got this lens because I had only prime lens and wanted to have a simple zoom lens when the occasion needed it. I know it’s not the fastest lens there is, but if it were the price of this lens would almost double. It is a great lens in well lit photos, and you might be able to get away with some poorly lit photos. It is phenomenal with long exposures, which I long doing. It can be a bit soft sometimes, but nothing too disappointing for what your paying for. It’s obviously not a G lens, but it gets the job done. Can be good for sports and nature for the casual photographer. When you zoom to it’s max the lens does extend out a bit, but nothing too crazy. Also, the part that extends is made out of plastic. It has OSS making it good for pictures and video, really helps when zoom out to 210mm and trying to take a picture. It’s aperture isn’t that fast to create good bokehlike a 1.8 prime lens, but a tip is to by pass that is zooming into your subject to compress distance and it will in turn give you a low aperture bokeh effect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product and excellent quality Or profession photographer neighbor recommended this camera for our adventures as a good all around camera as we step up from point and shoot into the future of manual controls and post processing. We're really happy with the camera

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best budget Zoom lens Sharp enough for this kind of budget lens. Does not perform well in low light but on sunny day or well lit studio or set, it's perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Excellent Telephoto Lens When I bought my alpha-6000 Sony Camera, I wanted a telephoto to extend my reach. After lugging around big DSLR telephotos for years, this one is a dream since it's light and small while delivering excellent pictures. I appreciate the vibration control since I'm older and not as steady as I used to be. Zooming is easy, and auto-focus is quick and accurate. It's wonderful that these mirrorless camera have accessories that allow so much of DSLR functionality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent "kit zoom" or semi-pro broadsword. Alright, to begin, I am not comparing this to a high end 70-200 f2.8. We all know we want one of those high end, fixed aperture lenses. This lens is under $500. There is no doubt that it isn't one of those lenses. For the price, it is a solid beast with good clarity and fine performance. If you haven't tried better, you won't know the difference and it will serve you well as a first "reach out and touch someone" kind of lens. All in a reasonably compact size (again, for what it is.) If you are a beginner or a pro looking for acceptable and affordable (but not necessarily top of the line) performance this is a solid purchase. It'd be perfectly fine for a portrait shooter, though I'd look for something a bit better for anything where you might find yourself looking for more out of your work - such as fashion shoots. This all said, given the slow, variable aperture, be mindful of your lighting. It is one of the worst things about a lens like this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome beginner lens I'm a beginner with taking photos with something that's not just a simple point-and-shoot camera. This lens with the sony nex camera is very simple to use and makes even a novice like me take awesome pictures. It focuses really well and the zoom is great for taking pictures at sporting events and weddings. I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to make their photos clearer when trying to zoom in on the action.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Works THe lens works just great with the A6000, gets the shots as expected. I have just one disappointment, it sucks the life out of the Battery. With only a few shots, under 5, I loose as much as 20% of the Battery. I mostly manual adjust the lens and then let it auto focus once I've framed the shot. Not sure If this is normal or just how I use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use. Great shots. This lens is easy to use and takes great photos. Used it extensively in the Canadian Rockies for both telephoto and macro shots. Very impressive results. A great compliment to the 18-50 that came with the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent optics I enjoy the use of this lens very much. The optics are very sharp. I have used for long distance photography when I could not get close to the object photographed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value I purchased this lens as a part of the A3000 bundle after reading the reviews here and in several sites. Over the holidays, I used the lens to take photos from Inspiration point on my NEX 7. Viewing them on my Mac, I was blown away. Images were extremely sharp, great color and the zoom was useful in capturing birds and the sunset. Considering the cost, this is a great purchase and I am very pleasantly surprised. It does need a lot of light and is not lightning fast to focus. But the photos were great throughout the zoom range. I would highly recommend this lens. It is a tremendous value for money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from May have bought a turkey I love the idea of this lens but the reality is that the images are badly ghosted. I've experimented with both handheld and tripod shots and on a lovely day with good light there are bad ghosts at 70mm and at 210mm. I plan on taking it back to the store and trying another lens as I read other reviews and haven't seen this complaint so I may have a bad lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens I got this lens for a couple of month, it came together with the NEX-F3Y kit, its pretty amazing with it superb quality of images. Particularly at low-light condition. The only problem is a little bit long in length, it might poses some discomfort while you are shooting photographs in a crowded area. But I guess probably I might get used to this as time goes by.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens... lacks sharpness at high end This is a very good, compact lightweight lens for my Nex 5N. Also cozy feel and good looking. Great for outdoor/portrait. Nice stabilization too. At the dark side - this lens is not sharp wide open at the tele end. If you zoom more that 150mm or so then you have to step down the aperture and the image quality is so so. This is 210mm in APS-C so you can expect it to work as good as a 350mm full frame. But in reality it doesn't. If you plan to take nice bird or animal picture it is not the lens for you (probably nex series is not for you) but if you plan to take picture for normal outdoor or some long range portrait - its perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well balanced Tele Zoom It is a nicely made and finished lens which works great on my Sony NEX 7. It is decent wide open, very sharp two stops down. The zoom mechanism is well placed and easy to move, the focus ring well placed as well. It also continues the use of 49mm filters which is great if you use a polarizer. I am pleased with the color, sharpness, contrast and bokeh of this lens. It fulfills it's intended purpose beautifully.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 18-200 vs 55-210 The 55-210 is 6.4 ozs lighter and a more fitting lens for the nex where the 18-200 is heavy and 67 mm in size. the 67 size does let more light in and 18 is better for shooting indoors where subjects are close to the camera but remember you will need a flash extender for this lens or the bigger HVL-F20s. If you don't want to spend a lot of money the 55-210 is the lens for you, As for me I have two nex cameras the nex 3 and the nex 5N so I plan on owning them both. I will probably only use the 18-200 on the nex 3 and get this lens for the nex5n.the reasons are the 18-200 is huge and looks out of place on the 5n camera and so does the flash.that being said I love the 18-200 and the F20s for hiking there's not much time to change out lens and or flash plus the dust and rain would be a problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition! I got the NEX5N last month, and couldn't wait for this 55-210mm lens to come out. I just received it last week! I find to be a great addition to the 18-55mm that comes with the camera. It provides telescoping capability, and works so seamlessly with the camera's shooting and editing functions. The camera recognizes the shutter and aperture ranges for this lens, so functions like manual focus, priority continuous shooting, and panoramic shots still comes out well. Optical quality is what you'd expect from Sony. Although it expectedly adds head weight to the camera, it's amazingly compact for the comparable zoom. For the cost, I feel that this telephoto addition was a better buy than getting the 18-200mm combination option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Response to two lower comments... To answer the first comment: You say you have the NEX-5 which should have come with the 18-55mm lens correct? If so then you should just go for this lens. 1) It is over $400 cheaper than the 18-200mm zoom lens and zooms further than that one by a bit. 2) Another reason why you should just go for this lens is because if your camera came with the 18-55 zoom lens, then this one, the 55-210mm lens, would basically pick up where the 18-55mm lens left off and go the extra distance you were looking for. I'd only recommend the 18-200mm lens if you didn't already have the 18-55mm lens....Does that make sense? Also, the f-stop that you see on the lens is the min and max aperture....That number is important especially when you're wanting to take pictures of sporting events and action shot. However, its only really important if you plan on manually adjusting the shutter speed. The higher you adjust the shutter speed the less light is let in. So when you adjust to shutter speed to the higher points, your pictures come out really dark so having a lens with a really high aperture, say 1.0 or 2.8, will allow you to open the aperture blades back up even though you have adjusted the shutter speed already, thus giving you the perfect shot. This camera already have a really high frames per second so getting that perfect actions shot be no problem even without adjusting the shutter speed to its fastest speed. I hope this helped! ;-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Answer to question above I am by no means an expert on photography but the f indicates how much light is let in. The lower the value, the more focused the subject is and the blurrier the background is. So, a 1.0 is great for flowers or still objects but tougher for people. As for comparing the 18-200, I am going for this since I don't want that large of a lens. I feel like the 18-200 is for people who don't want to change lenses and don't mind using such a large lens ALL the time. For me, it was a non-starter. Sony also only says this supports the new cameras. I'm assuming this is a misprint since it should support any NEX mount camera. Anyone know anything different?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Difference? Can anyone tell me what the key difference between this lens and the (18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Zoom Lens). I have the sony aNex 5, and I am debating to wait for this lens or buy the more expensive 18-200mm lens. Help would be appreciated. Can you also explain to me what the f/3.5-6.3 means?
