The Sony Alpha a7S III utilizes a newly-developed BIONZ XR image processing engine that offers 8x more processing power and a 12.1MP full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor with ultra-high sensitivity and 15+ stop wide dynamic range. Powerful Sensor and Imaging Engine
The 35mm full-frame 12.1MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor ensures high-sensitivity with low noise suitable for low-light situations and also reduces rolling shutter. Perfectly complementing the sensor is a BIONZ XR image processing engine that provides up to eight times more processing power and minimizes processing latency.
Professional Video Workflow Solutions
The Sony Alpha 7S III is capable of in-camera 4K recording up to 120 fps, 10-bit depth and 4:2:2 color sampling, delivering stunning videos. With a variety of advanced movie recording modes such as All-Intra (All-I) and MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 coding (XAVC HS), the camera offers flexible and efficient post-production workflow. In addition to S-Log3 gamma curves, the camera supports an HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile with minimum post-production. For additional post-production flexibility, Alpha 7S III allows up to 4K 60p 16-bit RAW output to an external recorder via HDMI Type-A connector.
Improved Image Quality
The CMOS image sensor and BIONZ XR image processing engine delivers sensitivity with significantly enhanced color reproduction and texture renderings for improved overall image quality. ISO sensitivity has been lowered to 80, resulting in a normal range of 80-102, 400 (expandable to 80-409, 600 for video and 40-409, 600 for stills) providing flexible ISO plus wide dynamic range with low noise at all settings. The Sony a7S III offers approximately 1-stop of noise reduction for improved image quality. Thanks to the high-sensitivity, this sensor and fast processing combo offers an impressive 15+ stop dynamic range for movies.
Fast Hybrid AF System
The Alpha 7S III uses a Fast Hybrid AF system that combines phase-detection and contrast-detection AF, for precise subject tracking over a wide area with outstanding speed, precision and smoothness, even when using a narrow depth of field. Its 759 phase-detection AF points cover up to 92% of the image sensor. The camera can achieve high AF precision to accurately and reliably focus in light down to EV-6, where subjects are difficult to see clearly even with the naked eye. The camera also offers Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF to maintain constant focus.
Flexible Autofocus Settings for Movie Shooting
The camera offers several AF features including AF Transition Speed in seven settings that helps create rack-focus transitions and five AF Subject Shift Sensitivity settings allowing you to customize how easily the AF will switch or stay with the locked-on subject. With a Touch Tracking feature you can not only initiate Real-time Tracking, but also compose and shoot while using a gimbal or while shooting handheld. You can also use the Touch Focus during manual focus mode on the LCD screen or remotely from the Imaging Edge Mobile application.
Heat-Dissipating Structure
Alpha 7S III’s improved design ensures effective heat dissipation to minimize overheating — even during extended continuous recording sessions at 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 video lasting an hour or more. This heat dissipating structure requires no fan or cabinet vents. It keeps the image sensor and image processing engine temperatures within their normal operating ranges and prevents overheating while maintaining compact body dimensions and camera’s dust and moisture resistance.
Easy to Use Features and Modes
For video on-the-go, the Alpha 7S III utilizes Active Mode with 5-axis optical in-body image stabilization providing stability during difficult handheld movie shooting. It features a side-opening 3-inch 1.44m-dot vari-angle touch panel LCD monitor that rotates sideways, upwards and downwards. The camera includes a selection of Creative Look with 10 presets that can be used when shooting both photo and video shoots, making it easy to create interesting moods right in the camera.
Electronic Viewfinder
The Sony Alpha 7S III includes a 9.44m-dot, 0.64-inch Quad-XGA OLED electronic viewfinder designed and refined for a professional workflow. It offers a 0.90x magnification, 41-degree diagonal field of view, 25mm high eyepoint for clear, low-distortion edge-to-edge viewing. The viewfinder is also dust, fog and moisture resistant.
CFexpress Type A Support
This mirrorless camera features two CFexpress Type A compatible media slots that also support UHS-I and UHS-II SDXC/SDHC cards. CFexpress Type A cards are suitable for high-speed continuous RAW still image shooting as well as 4K 120p movie recording at high bit rates. High-speed data transfer to a PC is possible. The dual slots can be set to relay mode for extended continuous recording as well as simultaneous recording.
Advanced Connectivity
Sony’s Alpha 7S III supports 5GHz/2.4GHz wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11ac) and offers MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) to improve communication quality by using multiple antennas. USB to high-speed wired LAN connectivity allows for stable and fast FTP transfer for both movies and stills. A USB Type-C connector that supports fast SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps (USB 3.2) data transfer is provided, enabling high-speed PC Remote (tethered) data transfer available for smooth handling of large image files.
